Further to our weather alert earlier in the week. Port Elizabeth received approximately 10 inches of snow on Wednesday night delaying terminal activity across the port. BCL is now anticipating a late Friday or very early Saturday departure for the Oleander and weather permitting, a Monday morning arrival maersk lines in Bermuda. The Master has advised that they re expecting heavy weather on the way to Bermuda so an exact ETA is not possible at this time. The two Bermudian cadets on board the Oleander have now seen how challenging winter weather on the north Atlantic can be. As many of you have heard, Atlantic Container Line has made the difficult decision to withdraw from the Bermuda trade. ACL has been the leading provider of transatlantic service to the island via its partnership with Bermuda Container Line since 1976. The difficult decision was made with BCL moving to Philadelphia at the end of February 2014.ACL will continue to provide Bermuda maersk lines customers with transatlantic Roll on and Roll off service to New York. From there it will be up to the customer to make arrangements to transfer to their preferred carrier for onward carriage maersk lines to Bermuda. ACL s agent in Bermuda, Container Ship Management will still provide assistance in setting up these transfers. Unfortunately, this will increase the cost to ship Ro-Ro Cargo to Bermuda going forward. CSM will do everything possible maersk lines to keep the increases to a minimum. The last voyage you can book Bermuda maersk lines bound cargo with ACL is on the Atlantic Conveyor 4207 departing Liverpool February 4th. These containers will be scheduled to arrive on Oleander voyage 1743 arriving in Bermuda maersk lines on the 17th of February. Please contact Container Ship Management should you have any questions or concerns at 441-295-1624. I must say I will miss the close working relationship we had with ACL and their customers over the years, but fully understand the decision they had to make and wish them well. Sincerely, Howard Pitcher | VP – Commercial Operations Container maersk lines Ship Management Ltd.
Drayage Costs For Bermuda importers ACL s withdrawal announcement is an unfortunate development as ACL has provided excellent service to Bermuda from UK/Europe for containers and Ro/Ro business virtually maersk lines since BCL began over 30 years ago. NGML encouraged ACL to stay in the Bermuda trade. However, most importers will be aware that transshipment rates to Bermuda have not increased for several years. maersk lines As such there was not enough margin in the rates to cover the additional drayage maersk lines (overland trucking) costs for containers to be delivered from, and be returned maersk lines to, Port Elizabeth from Philadelphia to compete with the direct carriers serving Philadelphia.
Transshipment Options over Philadelphia During the BUEI importer meeting in December importers were advised that importer access to global transshipment services was a key decision maersk lines factor. Holt terminals is currently served by MSC, the second largest carrier in the world, Hamburg maersk lines Sud, CMA/CGM, Marfret and Horizon Line. These carriers will enable Bermuda importers to continue purchasing goods from around the world and ship them to Bermuda. Other options are in development and service with other major carriers over New York and other east coast ports are already available. As BCL s service will shift to Philadelphia in early March importers are now speaking to their shippers and transshipment agents to re-route their cargo if needed. NGML will happily assist in this regard.
