Evergreen Marine, sixth largest container line in the world in capacity, returned to profit in the first half of this year, after the increase of freight rates and the occurrence of larger volumes. From January to June, the company reported net income of 4 billion Taiwan dollars (about hc cargo U.S. $ 122.4 million), a stark contrast to a net loss of 4.7 billion Taiwan dollars that the company recorded during the first half 2009.
Thus, Evergreen joins other major Asian container hc cargo lines - including Hanjin Shipping and NOL (Neptune hc cargo Orient Lines) - who reported the best interim or quarterly results during the last accounting period ended June 30. The surge in freight rates in trade with the United States in the second quarter helped lift the results, hc cargo and the route is currently responsible for almost half of the revenue of Evergreen Marine.
Executives and industry analysts generally expect the lines get even better results in the current quarter, the forecast high for shipments to Europe and the U.S., because of Christmas. To meet growing demand, Evergreen hc cargo ordered 10 vessels of 8000 TEUs (equivalent to a 20-foot container unit) with Samsung Heavy Industries at a price of U.S. $ 103 million each. The company hc cargo is also in talks with several other shipyards for construction of 10 vessels.
Maritime analysts reckon, because the number of orders of Evergreen have been reduced during the last years, new applications may not be as ambitious. However, with the projected delivery of new ships in the second half of this year, the global industry can provide exponential increase in supply capacity, while the load demand can cool.
