DAISY - From Greek Margarites, Margarita, whose original meaning was "pearl", only later being applied to flower. The earliest source of the Greek word is the subject of much debate. It is usually seen as related to Persian Eastern marva: ri: t "pearl" but there are those who see the word a kinship with the Sanskrit manjari "flower bud, pearl," or even a irânico compound * mrga-AHRI-ita " born from the egg of a bird, oyster ". The popularity of the name was due first to Antioch Daisy, Catholic saint revered in Portugal as Santa Marinha, and then the holy Margaret Mary and Rita (an Italian nickname Margherita). The Rita name of the Italian Santa Rita, is in its origin an abbreviation of Margherita.
